Scout: Jakob
Skating:
Has a high motor with decent strides moving up the ice. While not high end, he generates enough speed to maneuver his way through the middle of the ice during transition. He needs improvements on his acceleration and edge work, but has shown flashes of decent cuts to make himself effective down low and along the boards.
Passing/Handling:
A smart puck distributor. He often makes successful breakout passes in transition, moving the puck quickly tape to tape. He has decent hands, creating open space for himself to generate scoring chances. He will need to get stronger as there were times where’d get knocked off the puck easily. He can continue rounding out his puck skills, but might have some untapped potential offensively.
Shooting:
Has a quick wrist shot, but didn’t get to see much of his slap shot. He scores a lot of his goals by going to the net looking for tips and rebounds.
IQ (Vision, Anticipation, Panic/Poise):
Sees the ice decently well, but has a tendency to find himself trapped and will turn the puck over. However, he shows flashes of great anticipation and can read plays really well, especially when defending.
Forechecking:
Relentless checking, uses his stick effectively break up plays and isn’t afraid to play physical to knock his opponents off the puck. He will need to become stronger as he continues to play against bigger opponents.
Defense:
This is where he succeeds best. He positions himself extremely well cover up gaps, he blocks a ton of shots, and creates turnovers by using his stick to take away passing and shooting lanes.
Best Asset:
Defensive game
Biggest Concern:
Offensive upside. He is a fantastic defensive forward, but really should continue working on rounding out his offensive game, especially with finishing.
Top Tier/Role Potential:
Middle 6 center
Justification for Top Tier Assessment:
Bottom 6 forward
50th Percentile Tier/Role:
2C/3C
Justification for 50th Percentile Tier Assessment:
4C
Stylistic Comparable:
Artturi Lehkonen
Scouts Final Thoughts and Additional Stats/Info:
"Adam Sykora is a defensive forward who works hard in his own end of the ice. He blocks shots, effectively uses his stick to take away lanes, engages in board battles to fight for loose pucks, and breaks up plays with his relentless checking. While he isn’t much of a play driver In transition, he has decent enough speed and puck skills to complete his passes and be a smart puck distributor. In the offensive zone, he has a quick shot from mid to long range, but primarily will go to the front of the net to jam away for loose pucks and look for tips through traffic. He has a high motor, but should continue working on his acceleration speed, as well as his edge work. He can also continue working on becoming a better finisher to improve his offensive production.
Sykora plays the style of game that translates well to the NHL level, and I have no doubt that with some slight improvements, he will become a very good middle 6 forward who can kill penalties one day."
