Skating:
Chadwick is an adequate skater with good lateral mobility for his size. However, he will need to continue to increase first step quickness as he moves up the professional ranks.
Passing/Handling:
Chadwick is an underrated distributor who routinely makes smart plays with the puck. Whether he's evading a forechecker, moving the puck up the ice or manning the point on the top power play Chadwick demonstrates confidence in quickly identifying outlets and executing on those plays.
Shooting:
Chadwick is a willing shooter with a hard slap shot and a heavy accurate wrister. He displays good awareness in shot selection, including routinely throwing pucks at the net in traffic to generate chances.
IQ (Vision, Anticipation, Panic/Poise):
Chadwick uses his above average hockey sense and poise to evade forecheckers and move the puck out of the defensive zone to start the rush. He regularly makes sound decisions, playing with confidence at both ends of the ice and is counted on in all situations.
Forechecking:
Chadwick demonstrates good reads in the offensive zone and will pinch from the blueline when the opportunity presents itself.
Defense:
A solid defender with good positioning in the defensive zone. He uses his length effectively to break up plays through well-timed poke checks. Chadwick is not overtly physical, however he regularly uses his size to box out opponents in front of the net and will throw the body along the boards to separate the opposition from the puck.
Best Asset:
Chadwick's best asset is not trying to play outside of his abilities. He leverages his skillset effectively without trying to do too much, displaying a maturity within his game.
Biggest Concern:
He has a good base but will need to continue to improve in all facets of his game. In particular, he will need to continue to improve on initiating physicality and utilizing his large frame more effectively at the next levels, something that will be expected of a player his size in a bottom pairing role.
Top Tier/Role Potential:
Middle pairing, all situation defender with size and physicality who can chip in 20-30 points.
Justification for Top Tier Assessment:
Solid all around skillset, size and excellent decision making.
50th Percentile Tier/Role:
7th defenseman, AHL call up.
Justification for 50th Percentile Tier Assessment:
As a 6th round pick the competition is stiff. The odds are stacked against him despite his solid progression to date.
Stylistic Comparable:
Jake McCabe - Solid, all around defender with size, reach and puck moving acumen - the archetype of a defender the Leafs now covet. Chadwick will compete for a spot on the Marlies fall, and the Leaf's may have a bottom pairing option in 2-3 years if he continues on his development trajectory.
Scouts Final Thoughts and Additional Stats/Info:
Chadwick was the captain of the Lethbridge Hurricanes this past season was 3rd on the hurricanes on scoring with 53 points. He put up close to a PPG in the playoffs with 7 goals and 14 points in 16 games to close out his WHL career.
