Scout: Luke
Skating:
Above average foot speed, can beat most players in a race to the puck. Fast and efficient skating, knows where he wants to go and gets there at the right time.
Passing/Handling:
Good puck handling. Some plays he shows great stick handling ability but can over-stickhandle at times. Dangerous with space but if he’s in a tight area he is going to give the puck away nearly every time.
Great passing, not elite but he reliably makes the right play when breaking out and in the neutral zone. In the offensive zone he creates some high quality chances with creative passing. Always has his head up scanning and is extremely dangerous when he has space.
Shooting:
Below average shot lacking power and accuracy. He finds himself in good scoring position often but misses the net or does not force a difficult save/rebound. Almost all of his goals come from chances off the rush where he uses his speed and hands to get the goalie moving rather than beating an in-position goalie with his shot.
IQ (Vision, Anticipation, Panic/Poise):
His off the puck movement on the rush and in the offensive zone is elite and the puck seems to find him off rebounds, when the goalie is out of position or when he’s already slipped past the last defender. As a result most of his goals are not technically challenging as he creates high quality chances with his head rather than relying on an elite shot. With the puck he has a tendency to force plays towards the net, which can be valuable in some instances but he can overlook an easier higher percentage play just to get the puck on net.
Forechecking:
Forechecks with energy and is eager to win the puck back and create a chance. Loses puck battles due to size, balance and strength.
Defense:
Tends to be a liability in the defensive zone. Jellvik will lean in with one hand on the stick to poke it loose or deflect it rather than hound someone to really add pressure and force a turnover. Always looking to jump forward on the rush which can leave the defense vulnerable. Found out of position often and leads to goals against at a high rate.
Best Asset:
Off the puck movement. Constantly finds soft spots in the offensive zone via his skating ability and IQ; he's always in great body position to receive the puck. If his shot improves he could become a lethal scorer.
Biggest Concern:
Shooting ability. Scores half of his goals from high danger chances (xG >0.2) and gets nearly nothing from low danger chances (xG <0.1). If the shot improves where he can beat NCAA goalies squared up then he can take a massive step forward.
Top Tier/Role Potential:
Tier 3
Justification for Top Tier Assessment:
Useful player 5 on 5 due to his ability to make plays and score goals, but is going to need to work on defensive game to play at a higher level. Could get usage on the powerplay as well, but will not be the finisher.
50th Percentile Tier/Role:
Minor league player
Justification for 50th Percentile Tier Assessment:
The lack of size and strength is not currently offset by elite skills elsewhere. Jellvik will need to develop his game defensively, improve his shot, and maintain his speed mismatch with opposing players as he goes to the next level or he will struggle.
Stylistic Comparable:
A younger less physical Jake DeBrusk; both are fast with lots of energy offensively but not the most reliable guys defensively. Both have a nose for the net and the puck always finds them, and though they lack an elite shot the goals stack up due to high danger chance volume.
Scouts Final Thoughts and Additional Stats/Info:
Jellvik is an interesting player to monitor, but unless he takes some significant steps forward in key areas he does not project to be a top 6 forward in the NHL. He is still young and has some skills that should translate to the NHL with a few more years of development.
