Scout: Craig Wise
Skating:
Average to slightly above, speedy forward who uses his edges to maintain speed around defenders or in transition. Utilizes tight button hooks to evade defenders and buy time for his linemates to catch up.
Passing/Handling:
Above average hands, Surin will have fans out of there seats with his quick smooth hands. Surin utilizes quick little passes to create space and able to find open lanes to create offence.
Shooting:
Average, Surin doesn't shoot a whole lot, but when he does its a quick powerful release. If he develops the knack to shoot more this could quickly develop into an above average category.
IQ (Vision, Anticipation, Panic/Poise):
Below average, usually chooses the low percentage play rather than the easy pass. When carrying the puck into the offensive zone too many times he turned the puck over at the line, rather than getting it in deep. Surin was definitely more successful in the MHL games I watched so I wonder if he's still getting his timing down and figuring out what will and wont work in the KHL. It is hard to deny the talent is there, but the amount of mistakes need to be cleaned up before any NHL coach will give him a shot.
Forechecking:
Average, Surin isnt afraid to be the first man in on the forecheck and throw his body around.
Defense:
Average, utilizes his speed to press defenders, however can sometimes be found cheating for offence.
Best Asset:
Surin's best asset is his puck handling, he has the potential to be a proficient playmaker if all breaks right.
Biggest Concern:
The amount of turnovers currently will hold Surin out of the NHL, he does have the potential to clean this up.
Top Tier/Role Potential:
Tier 2, 70 points with average BASH
Justification for Top Tier Assessment:
The playmaking is there, the shot is coming along and if he can find himself in the top 6 then I like his chances of reaching this ceiling.
50th Percentile Tier/Role:
Tier 3 50 points with average BASH
Justification for 50th Percentile Tier Assessment:
Surin is going to have to sacrifice some of his playmaking to improve his two-way game. How much of it remains a question, but I think the raw talent alone will help him succeed into a middle 6 role.
Stylistic Comparable:
Mattias Maccelli with a little bit more physicality and better shot.
Scouts Final Thoughts and Additional Stats/Info:
