BERKLY CATTON

2025-04-25

Scout: Grant Campbell

Skating:

great skater. shifty with or without the puck and creates separation in both scenarios. Very good balance and agility. His first 2-3 strides are electric.

Passing/Handling:

very good at stick handling in tight and excellent at taking passes with his stick or feet. He sees the ice very well and protects the puck. It is not uncommon for him to have the puck on his stick in the OZ for 10 seconds or more as he circles the zone. He has great passing vision and finds open teammates. He can overhandle the puck at the WHL level, but will learn as he progresses. He makes some spectacular passes in the OZ.

Shooting:

He has an average snap shot that he might beat goalies with from within the hashmarks, but will struggle outside that.

IQ (Vision, Anticipation, Panic/Poise):

Has very high hockey IQ, which leads to excellent anticipation. The puck seems to find him and he knows how to find the soft spots to get open

Forechecking:

his skating lets him get in quickly on forechecks, but he's not going to win his fair share of board battles. He can be physical when engaged, but that is not his game. He is a perimeter player in the OZ.

Defense:

If he's playing center, he can get caught deep in the OZ and be the last man back, so will need to clean that up. He's fairly good in the faceoff circle, but it will be his defense that decides if he is a winger or a center in the NHL. At center, he can be drawn above the hashmarks to open up the slot, so will need to improve that as well.

Best Asset:

Skating and passing are his two best assets. Even when he's gliding he can go around defenders in the WHL. He consistently beats the first man in the WHL, but this will be much more difficult in the AHL and NHL. Catton can make plays at high speed.

Biggest Concern:

He can get caught stick handling with his head down at times. Will need to eliminate that in the AHL/NHL. No concerns other than size and strength at this point.

Top Tier/Role Potential:

Top line Center playing PP1. 25-30 goals and 45-55 assists. Throw in 300 or 400 face off wins. He's that good.

Justification for Top Tier Assessment:

He's too good, to not be the player on any roster he's on to be the guy carrying the puck in the offensive zone more than anyone else.

50th Percentile Tier/Role:

Second line forward who has the defensive game drilled into him by AHL or NHL coaches, which takes away some of his free wheeling habits.

Justification for 50th Percentile Tier Assessment:

He could struggle to find the open ice at the next level as much as he has enjoyed in the WHL, which is expected, but to what degree is the question?

Stylistic Comparable:

Clayton Keller

Scouts Final Thoughts and Additional Stats/Info:

Catton, in my opinion is going to be a fantasy must add in most pools in the next two or three years. He might not score that many goals but I do think he will be a point per game player for quite a few years.

Games Scouted:

04/05/2025 Spokane vs Vancouver WHL; 02/14/2025 Tri-City vs Spokane WHL
