IVAN RYABKIN

2024-10-30

Scout: Patrick Ploch

Skating:

Ryabkin is a smooth skater. I didn't see top end speed but he got around the ice quite well and I wouldn't consider it a weakness.

Passing/Handling:

Passing and handling is his greatest strength. In fact, in the game I watched he tended to pass rather than shoot most of the time. He made smart touch passes to teammates or cross ice passes to setup one timers.

Shooting:

His shot selection left something to be desired. He had some slap shots that went astray and seemed hesitant to take wrist shots even when he was in a good position.

IQ (Vision, Anticipation, Panic/Poise):

I believe he has a good hockey IQ. I did think he tended to pass the puck too early sometimes but they were good passes. He reads the play well and reacts.

Forechecking:

Ryabkin is good on the forecheck. He supports his teammates on board battles and gets in good positions for a pass in others.

Defense:

Ivan is good on defense. He skates back and breaks up plays or helps his defensemen and then facilitates break outs.

Best Asset:

I do think he has a pretty good hockey IQ but I will say his passing and handling are his biggest asset.

Biggest Concern:

Based on this game, I would say his shot. It wasn't impressive in this game.

Top Tier/Role Potential:

Hard for me to say at this point. 1st line, PP1

Justification for Top Tier Assessment:

Based on his skillset and previous results it shows a high skill and compete level that would likely translate.

50th Percentile Tier/Role:

Second line, PP2

Justification for 50th Percentile Tier Assessment:

He has started slow this year but will likely look better by season's end and justify second line upside at a minimum.

Stylistic Comparable:

The first player that came to mind was Brad Lambert but I think Ryabkin has a better IQ and more compete.

Scouts Final Thoughts and Additional Stats/Info:

I wasn't overly impressed by what I saw, especially in regards to his shot. Perhaps there's an injury involved or it will show better in more viewings. I do think that since he isn't flashy that he doesn't look dynamic and his skill can be overlooked. I am looking forward to tracking him as the season goes along.
