KOEHN ZIEMMER

2025-07-15

Scout: Grant Campbell

Skating:

Slightly below average. He's a north/south skater who lacks agility. He's strong on his feet with good balance. He will need to improve in this area at the AHL/NHL levels.

Passing/Handling:

He is an average passer and while he does possess pretty good hands in tight, he'll need to improve his pass taking abilities at speed. He will need to process the game much quicker at the AHL/NHL levels, which will be a test for his current skill level.

Shooting:

He has a nice, quick snap/wrist shot that seems heavy at the WHL level, but might not be at the next levels.

IQ (Vision, Anticipation, Panic/Poise):

He was clearly nervous playing his first few games at the AHL level and was like a deer in the headlights at times for the few viewings there. He showed some flashes of offensive vision, but exhibited very little anticipation. At the WHL, he played with confidence and the puck seems to follow him (it didn't hurt to play with Riley Heidt). He knows his limitations with the puck in his own end and gets the puck out when he can.

Forechecking:

This should be his bread and butter as he's strong on his feet and has good size. His skating holds him back a little to get in on the forecheck in the AHL. He will need to really work on this aspect of his game as this is what will get him to the NHL.

Defense:

He's fairly responsible defensively with the puck, but lacks some awareness without the puck in his own end. Like a lot of young players, he has a bad habit of holding his stick with one hand for most of the time in his own end. He forgets to move his feet at times and can be quite static. He's not a shot blocker at this point.

Best Asset:

His shot is probably his best asset with the potential of being a physical player who combines that with scoring being his biggest appeal.

Biggest Concern:

He appears to have put his eggs in the offensive only basket so far, which is unlikely to get him past the AHL. He'll need to drill down on his physical play and become a defensive stalwart who regularly sacrifices his body to make the NHL. He's not close at this time.

Top Tier/Role Potential:

Bottom-six forward who can chip in 12-15 goals with 100 plus hits each year.

Justification for Top Tier Assessment:

He has a bit of a knack for scoring and he has the physical tools to play that role.

50th Percentile Tier/Role:

An AHL player who tops out at 20-25 goals in the top-six.

Justification for 50th Percentile Tier Assessment:

To even get to this tier, he will need to elevate his game quite a bit. He has a bit of development ahead of him in the next year or two.

Stylistic Comparable:

Little bits of Brock Boeser and Keegan Kolesar would be the ultimate combo-style in the NHL if he could put it all together.

Scouts Final Thoughts and Additional Stats/Info:

Ziemmer is just 20-years old with three games of AHL experience after putting up 128 goals in 244 WHL games. The AHL is going to be a tough challenge for him as he lacks the skating and skill-set at this point to do well here in the short-term. I think if he has any success it will be over two to three years and he will need to re-vamp his game to include defense and a more physical game.

Scout: Jakob Horn

Skating:

Below Average- Not much explosiveness in his strides, which doesn’t allow him to pick up much speed. Same with cuts and edges as he falls a step behind because there isn’t much quickness.

Passing/Handling:

Above average- Shown flashes of nice puck skills. Not much of a playmaker, but has the ability to create open space for himself.

Shooting:

Great- Quick release off his blade with plenty of power and accuracy.

IQ (Vision, Anticipation, Panic/Poise):

Medium- When under pressure, he has a tendency of forcing passes to areas where there’s nobody around. However, he has shown flashes of poise to maneuver his way around and create open space for himself.

Forechecking:

Average- Isn't necessarily a work horse when forechecking, but is effective when he puts in the work. Likes to use physicality to knock opponents off the puck.

Defense:

Above average- Showed decent positioning in his own end, using his stick to take away passing lanes. Not afraid to play physical and throws some big hits here and there.

Best Asset:

Shot

Biggest Concern:

Skating- His quickness and agility needs improvement, along with his cuts and edges.

Top Tier/Role Potential:

Middle 6 winger- Best case scenario, he improves his skating and becomes a solid two-way winger who can occasionally score some goals and kill penalties.

Justification for Top Tier Assessment:

2W/3W

50th Percentile Tier/Role:

Middle to bottom 6 winger- This is likely where he succeeds the most at the NHL level, defensive responsibilities with penalty killing time.

Justification for 50th Percentile Tier Assessment:

3W/4W

Stylistic Comparable:

Barclay Goodrow

Scouts Final Thoughts and Additional Stats/Info:

Ziemmer is a two-way forward some nice puck skills and a quick shot. While he isn't much of a playmaker, he is able to find space for himself to create his scoring chances. He works best in the defensive zone, where he positions himself well enough to take away passing lanes and engage in physical battles. He needs work on his skating in order to maximize his full potential at the NHL level, specifically in his strides and edges.
