Scout: Jeremy Vercillo
Skating:
Bourque is quick in all facets. He's fast, agile, and quick to react. At the AHL level it definitely seemed like he was leading almost every play.
Passing/Handling:
His hands are also quick, leading to deceptive puck handling. He's good with it on his stick, and can make quick passes off the stickhandle.
Shooting:
His shot is fine, but nothing special. I suspect he'll score most of his goals from in close or off of beating his man, as opposed to true "shooters goals" off the rush or from a zone setup.
IQ (Vision, Anticipation, Panic/Poise):
Elite. He's always circling and great at getting open off the puck. When he does have the puck he seems to always know where his teammates are.
Forechecking:
He did not appear to be particularly aggressive, and more looked for opportunistic turnovers created by his linemates.
Defense:
HIs defense isn't anything special, but his speed and agility allow him to cover a lot of ground in-zone. I could see him being a reliable all-situations guy in the future.
Best Asset:
Playmaking ability... some combination of shot, stickhandling, passing, and IQ. It's more the sum of the parts than any one of those skills.
Biggest Concern:
He needs to get stronger -he can be weak on the puck and in the corners, and it's especially noticeable on faceoffs. I actually don't see him sticking at center long term with hintz and johnston already established.
Top Tier/Role Potential:
point per game L1/PP1 guy
Justification for Top Tier Assessment:
Bourque's playmaking game is really good. With the right linemates I could see him popping off at the NHL level
50th Percentile Tier/Role:
second line/PP2 60 point guy
Justification for 50th Percentile Tier Assessment:
He's got the talent, but guys at the NHL level may just be bigger, faster, and stronger than him so he settles into more of a secondary role.
Stylistic Comparable:
Mitch Marner
Scouts Final Thoughts and Additional Stats/Info:
Games Scouted:
Mostly AHL playoff ones. One NHL one.
