Scout: Brandon
Skating:
Hutson is a near perpetual dynamo who possesses skilled edge work and high tempo drive.
He gains acceleration through the curvilinear routes and pivots as opposed to a heads down linear sprint.
Hutson tends to be a high milage, large real estate skater where he uses his varying position on the ice to give creative pass options to teammates and to and keep away from static coverage.
Passing/Handling:
Hutson doesn’t spend a lot of time with the puck on his stick as he thrives in and fosters from a dynamic puck movement environment.
He is able to quickly load the puck and dish it off to a preselected target.
Hutson seems to use centripetal force to secure the puck on his blade when maneuvering around obstacles.
Shooting:
Like his puck handling, when it comes to shooting, Hutson likes to get a shot away before the defender and goaltender are set and can get a read on his shot attempt.
More often than not, he tends to be an intentional shooter which allows him to add a little extra gusto to his shot.
He tends to not telegraph a shot attempt by being quite economical with his pre-shot mechanics.
IQ (Vision, Anticipation, Panic/Poise):
Hutson is certainly geared towards an offensive, team puck possession mindset.
He is well suited to flow into spaces of the ice that the play is likely to transform into. This either allows him to be an open target or to pressure a puck carrier.
While I wouldn’t say that he has panic to his game, his default tempo may look like over excitement and impatience at times.
Forechecking:
Hutson tends to be one of the first forwards on the forecheck and is willing to apply pressure below the goal line.
His weapon on the forecheck is rooted in a fast and shifty pursuit of either the puck carrier directly or a lane between the carrier and their primary support.
Hutson is willing to engage in a creative dog fight with the puck carrier where he will directly attack only to force them to abandon their plan A. He will then peel off and apply indirect pressure by flanking passing or skating routes or re-engage to try and discombobulate any pattern or flow of the opposition.
Defense:
Hutson’s defensive responsibilities seem to lie in the realm of outlet support and coverage of the ice between hashmarks if things were to break down.
It is rare to see him provide physical support down low or along the boards as he is geared towards taking advantage off the transition rather than causing the turnover.
Best Asset:
Hutson’s default is a high tempo game where he can preserve momentum through locomotion.
Biggest Concern:
He has a penchant for flying the d-zone early if he senses that his team is about to gain puck control.
I would like to see a similar application of his forechecking motor to the defensive side of the ice.
Top Tier/Role Potential:
Middle 6 energy role and pesky forechecker who can capitalize off transition, rush, or cycle. 30-40 points. Decent BaSH.
Justification for Top Tier Assessment:
While the drive and work ethic are clearly evident, the well roundedness and high end skill may not be there nor translate to the pro game to push further up the depth chart.
50th Percentile Tier/Role:
Part-time bottom 6. AHL Standout.
Justification for 50th Percentile Tier Assessment:
Translatability and room to develop are cause for concern in terms of professional application.
Stylistic Comparable:
A blend of Cogliano and Martinook with far less physicality and grit but more finesse and agility.
